The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites applications for funding of basic, mechanistic, and/or preclinical research in all domains of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), in order to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action of CAM therapies and to provide a stronger foundation for ongoing and planned clinical studies. The NCCAM encourages outstanding CAM and conventional researchers to focus on opportunities in CAM research and to employ cutting-edge technologies to strengthen the knowledge bases needed to improve clinical practice. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), NIH, share programmatic interests in some areas of CAM research with NCCAM. The areas of interest are described below.
Research areas of special interest:
THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (NCCAM)
Areas of special interest are posted on the NCCAM Web site at: http://nccam.nih.gov/research/priorities/index.htm#5.
THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI)
The NCI is interested in basic, mechanistic and preclinical research as it relates to the prevention of cancer. Areas of interest include interactions between bioactive dietary components and CAM modalities. For further information, please see: http://www.cancer.gov/cam/research_information.html.
THE OFFICE OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS (ODS)
The ODS is committed to promoting quality science in dietary supplement research and places great emphasis on the use of emerging technologies and cross-disciplinary studies to support research to further the understanding of the biochemical and cellular effects of dietary supplements on biological systems and their physiological impact across the life cycle.
